Treetops resembled a guard tower from a WW2 prison camp and was entered through a trapdoor in the floor. Though thirty years ago how clear is the memory, the game book for observations, wildlife identification prints on the walls and branches nodding at the windows forty feet up. When I returned to make the painting it required a strenuous search of the undergrowth to locate the derelict, rotting back into the forest floor. The river was surging through the woods on either side and the power and sound was magnificent to behold. The composition below the force is a well known lakeland classic however I chose the prospect from above for the sweeping movement and vista downstream. My preparation for such paintings involves several visits and on one of these I brought a step ladder and made a quick charcoal study from an elevated position which caused some good natured mirth from the gathering. Among the Carlisle paintings this stands out for adventures during the painting and bringing the works to a whole new audience. It was some experience to work on location during match days. At one point I was helped by protective Blues fans moving the painting gear over the road to avoid a trampling by the vociferous Hartlepool support. The art appreciation was unusually colourful. The diminutive group of fellwalkers included for scale have travelled the High Level Route on Pillar Mountain and are now faced with the prospect of an ascent along The Shamrock Traverse seen rising diagonally over the cliff face. It is generally considered that the modern sport of rock climbing was invented and developed here and the volume of rock set 900ft up the mountainside is larger than The Great Pyramid. Other painters sometimes enquire how the clear water effect is achieved. For this painting I used glazing and scumbling methods to indicate the gradually deepening water towards the bridge. Closer the river bed is clearly seen, with distance the reflection and glare from the sky become the stronger. Looking into clear water neither camera or brush can get near the visual capacity of the eye. With a little practice most can switch perception from deep water to surface reflection. I went up to Glen Affric in Scotland and arrived one freezing evening as the light was fading, the colours were drawing in to a lovely, almost monochrome cool hue which I tried to catch on my return to the studio. Each year I will produce several works inspired by such places. In "The Magicians Nephew" C.S. Lewis reveals a wood which is beyond our world and induces a trancelike state of calm. Silent reflective pools leading to other worlds are are all around amongst the trees. I watched the Anthony Hopkins film about Donald Campbell and in the opening sequence he drives along Coniston Water in the pearl blue E-Type Jaguar. The following morning Harry and Megan were married and drove off to the reception in an electric version of the same car.
